Supporting trans, gender diverse and non-binary people to access appropriate and inclusive healthcare

Foreword by Dr Irene Dolan, GP Clinical Editor, Clinician Assist WA with personal insights from pathway subject matter experts Lena Van Hale, Dr. Julia K. Moore and Dr. Sally Murray.*

The Clinician Assist WA Transgender Health and Gender Diversity pathway and associated Transgender Specialised Assessment request page were published in 2022. The pathway outlines the assessment, management and referral pathways to specialised services for trans, gender diverse and non-binary people of all ages.**

Based on national and international guidelines, it provides advice on creating welcoming and inclusive clinical environments for TGDNB people, provides details on available supports for TGDNB people and their families, outlines how to assess and manage TGDNB people of all ages and includes local referral pathways for specialist services, as well as a section on professional support.

Development of the Transgender Health and Gender Diversity  pathway began with a working group of GPs with experience in transgender health, specialists, representatives from the TGDNB community and researchers to discuss local issues relating to TGDNB health.

Further development took place in consultation with a subject matter expert (SME) group including specialists from the Royal Perth Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital Gender Diversity Services and representatives from the TGDNB community. GPs with experience in transgender health were also involved in pathway development and final consultation was undertaken with the Department of Health WA.

This pathway has only been possible thanks to the tireless and continued support of a very dedicated group of SMEs.

In this GP Connect feature, three of these SMEs share their personal insights with you. It is hoped that these articles and the pathway will help you in your work with TGDNB people and support you to provide healthcare that addresses their specific needs.
