Tips for staying emotionally resilient during COVID-19

We are all participants in the COVID-19 pandemic, one way or another.

While we are working to support our communities and those most at risk of poor health outcomes, we are also trying to care for ourselves and our families, who are experiencing additional pressure and stress.

This is what Executive Director of PORTS and Mindspot, Professor Nick Titov, told WA Primary Health Alliance staff during a webinar last week, which in the community spirit that is prevailing at the moment, is now available for all health organisations to benefit from.

The Tips For Staying Emotionally Resilient webinar, presented by Professor Titov and WA Primary Health Alliance CEO Learne Durrington, offers guidance applicable to all of us working in the health and mental health sectors during this pandemic.

“This has been a really difficult and a stressful time for people not only across the state of Western Australia or even across the country of Australia, but globally,” Professor Titov said.

“The impact of COVID-19 has been quite profound.

“We’re also working closely with other organisations such as Beyond Blue and we’ve developed specific web pages to help people navigate this difficult time as well as tip sheets and a whole host of other resources.”

While the tips offer general advice on maintaining healthy habits, routines, thoughts and social connections, PORTS has also developed advice for those working on the front line of the pandemic.

These include practicing switching on and off, practicing psychological safety, allowing yourself to be human and leading by example.

Professor Titov said it was important to note that while tips wouldn’t change anyone’s situation, they could be used to help people to cope better.

“We’re all personally involved. None of us are watching from the sidelines. We’re all participants,” he said.

“At the same time, we’re trying to support the community through our work as we try to look after ourselves and our family and that of course increases the pressure and stress on us.”
