A new primary care clinic in Katanning is supporting those experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the area.
Through a Homelessness Access Program grant, St Lukes Family Practice has established a safe place for those needing access to primary care services.
The clinics are run by an experienced local team who are passionate about supporting under-served communities and who are skilled at creating a person-centred and welcoming environment. Triaging and referral to support services, wound management, immunisation, health assessments, and counselling are all part of the service.
WA Primary Health Alliance QI coach, Jo Crooks, supported establishment of the service, including setting up a reporting framework of agreed key performance indicators, with the aim of demonstrating the effectiveness of local solutions and placed-based commissioning.
Milestones to date include:
- Needs of the local community identified, and key local stakeholders engaged.
- Clients provided easy access to primary care through referral pathways.
- Snacks, blankets, swags and other items supplied as needed.
- Clinic promoted to other local services, including visits from Anglicare WA, Palmerston, Centrelink.
- Identification of groups at risk, through school, childcare and sporting groups.
Nursing staff at St Lukes have also completed the Essentials of Emergency Nursing: A Workshop for Practice Nurses which covers issues such as mental health assessment, and many other relevant topics. From 1 November 2025, St Luke’s Family Practice will be operating as a Medicare bulk billing practice. Practice Manager, Ms Claire Fleming, said transitioning to Medicare bulk billing is part of our commitment to ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all members of our community.
“We recognise that cost can be a barrier to seeking timely medical care, and this change allows patients to prioritise their health without financial concern. Ultimately, it’s about strengthening community wellbeing and supporting a healthier future for everyone we serve.”
The clinic is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Walk-ins and referrals from other services are welcome.
St Luke’s Family Practice remains fully accredited under the RACGP Standards for General Practices, continuing to provide safe, professional, and patient-centred care.
This service is supported by funding from WA Primary Health Alliance through the Australian Government’s PHN Program.
