The implementation of new abortion legislation in WA just over 12 months ago (April 2024), has removed clinically unnecessary barriers for women accessing an abortion by:
- Enabling GPs, nurse practitioners and endorsed midwives to prescribe the medical abortion medicine (MS-2 Step) within their scope of practice and training
- Removing the mandatory counselling requirement
- Increasing the gestational limit at which an abortion may be performed
- Specifying mandated obligations for all medical practitioners, even those who conscientiously object.
A free WA Department of Health helpline 1800 4 Choice (1800 424 642) is available to GPs for clinical queries regarding abortion care and to patients for information about pregnancy choices and abortion care options across Western Australia.
