New palliative care resources to support planning, grief and loss

To support those navigating the challenges that come with approaching end of life, WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) through its Greater Choices for At Home Palliative Care initiative, has partnered with Palliative Care WA (PCWA) to produce two new booklets, Palliative Caring and My Palliative Care.

The free WA specific resources were developed to support people receiving or considering palliative care as well as carers and families as they navigate the often-uncharted waters of caring for a loved one.

Developed in consultation with a panel of palliative care professionals and endorsed by WAPHA’s multicultural and LGBTIQA+ reference groups, the booklets cover a variety of topics including planning, decision making, rural and remote considerations, caring at home and grief.

WAPHA Activity Lead – Palliative Care, Tish Morrison was one of the panel members highly involved in the development of the resources.

“It was a privilege to be part of the expert panel who reviewed the existing ‘Palliative Caring’ booklet and decided to create two separate resources to address the different needs of a person facing the end of their life and those of carers, who are critical in supporting choice of their loved one at the end of their life.

The process took over six months to complete and each panel member brought their own expertise, curiosity and commitment to produce a contemporary resource that can be used across all sectors of health and aged care.”

The Palliative Caring and My Palliative Care booklets were officially launched 6 March 2024, and are available to order as a hard copy or to download on the PCWA website. For more information, contact info@palliativecarewa.asn.au or phone 1300 551 704.

The booklets have been made possible through funding from the Greater Choices for at Home Palliative Care measure, an Australian Government initiative implemented by WAPHA supporting people to access safe, quality palliative care at home, find out more here.
