New Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) data shows more Australian girls and women are receiving hospital care for endometriosis, with hospitalisation rates rising 23 per cent over the past decade, from 145 to 180 per 100,000 people. The increase was much higher than the five per cent rise in all female hospitalisations over the same period.
The report, Endometriosis hospital procedures, provides new insight into the procedures most used to diagnose and treat the condition. Hospitalisations without a procedure also increased, from six per cent in 2015–16 to nine per cent in 2024–25, suggesting greater access to advanced pain management. The most common procedures were diagnostic procedures, IUD insertions and laparoscopic surgery.
