Need for vaccination continues in aged care

People aged 65 years and older face higher risk of developing serious complications from vaccine-preventable illnesses compared to younger adults. Being vaccinated against these diseases reduces the risk of getting sick and potential hospitalisation. It is important to keep up to date with vaccinations and for residential aged care homes (RACHs) to assist residents to access vaccinations.

To this end, WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) is hosting a two part webinar series on how RACHs access their resident’s immunisation history and what vaccinations are recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisations.

Webinar One: Accessing the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) and My Health Record (MHR) in aged care

This webinar will showcase how any facility can enable itself to access HPOS, PRODA and AIR. It will feature a demonstration on how to search for a resident’s immunisation statement and how to use the information to ensure that your residents are up to date with their vaccinations to ensure the best health outcomes.

There will be a run through on the differences between AIR and MHR and how both systems will provide an insight for those working in aged care settings on how the use of these record platforms are helping to make a difference in providing vital information in fighting vaccine preventable diseases.

Resources will be shared following the education session which can be used to upskill other staff in your facility.

When: October 29, 2024

Time: 6pm -7pm via Microsoft Teams

Webinar Two: Immunisation in aged care and the General Practice in Aged Care Incentive

This webinar will look at why vaccinations need to be continued as we age, what vaccinations are currently recommended, and issues around consent. We will also give an overview of the General Practice in Aged Care Incentive, how it relates to the aged care standards and provide examples on how to incorporate it into clinical governance frameworks and QI plans.

Resources will be shared after the webinar that can be shared with other staff in your facility.

When: Tuesday 26 November 2024

Time: 6pm – 7pm via Microsoft Teams

Please note that WAPHA is also able to offer face-to-face education sessions with aged care staff to talk about what immunisations are important for people entering or living in a residential aged care home. This is a good opportunity to get more information if your team members are unable to attend the webinars.

Please contact WAPHA’s COVID-19 and Immunisation Team at RACFvaccination@wapha.org.au to arrange a presentation at your facility.
