Measles warning after local transmission in WA

The WA Department of Health issued a public health alert on 14 July following two identified cases of locally acquired measles.

These latest cases travelled between Perth, Newman and Port Hedland and visited several public venues while infectious. Details of these locations are on the WA Health website.

Health professionals should be alert for measles, particularly among returned overseas travellers and ensure all staff have a high index of suspicion for measles in patients presenting with a febrile rash.

Please notify suspected cases immediately to a local Public Health Unit by telephone (8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) or to WA Health (after hours).

Free MMR vaccines are available to people susceptible to measles, even if they are not eligible for Medicare and serology is not required before vaccinating.
