Derived from evidence-based psychological therapies, focused psychological strategies (FPS) are specific mental health care treatment strategies that equip GPs to manage and support patients experiencing difficulties with their mental health. This includes cognitive behavioural therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychoeducation and relaxation strategies.
The delivery of focused psychological strategies by GPs, particularly in rural and remote locations, gives people access to affordable and cost-effective psychological interventions where there is a shortage or lack of psychologists and psychiatrists.
Eligible GPs are being reimbursed $800 once they complete the requirements for FPS ST and register as GP providers of FPS with Services Australia.
